Katharina Fritsch
Born in 1956 in Essen (Germany). Lives and works in Dsseldorf (Germany).
"Rat-king" (1993), monumental installation with sixteen black rats in polyester resin, whose tails form a knot.
Katharina Fritsch is inspired by popular images and stories. Here, she plays on an extremely rare animal phenomenon, that of the "king of the rats", which has become legendary. By its size, hieraticism and colour, her work produces, at one and the same time, a fascination and a repulsion that become, in turn, unforgettable - like childhood memories.
