The issue of identity/ies is at the centre of any approach to geopolitics and art. It is sufficiently wide-ranging to allow a fascinating array of propositions. “Lyon Septembre de la photographie 2008” has chosen for its fifth edition to focus on Europe, exploring the origins of its identity through the practices of image-makers with creative documentary approaches, who patiently strive to reduce the schism in our perspective: on one side, the outer world with its sociological components; and on the other, inner subjectivity charged with poetry. Our purpose? To gradually nurture interaction with image-hungry publics. What they seek is not empty communication but far-reaching investigations of the world we live in... These investigations reflect the shift from the photography of identity, common to all, to the identity of photography, specific to each of us.
